The economic benefits and environmental benefits of the technology licensed to Ecosystem Projects result from a combination of features including:
- The ability to separate the facility which converts solid waste to fuel from the facility which converts that fuel to energy
- The ability to achieve greater efficiencies in the recovery or extraction of energy from waste fuels.
- The ability to produce and sell a natural gas substitute and power for less than the delivered cost of natural gas and power.
- The ability to achieve better environmental performance in respect to air emissions, landfilling efficiency, land use, water usage, groundwater impacts, and stack heights compared to waste export, traditional landfilling and incineration.
Benefits in the case of municipal solid waste are based upon the assumption that it has a composition consistent with United States Environmental Protection Agency norms. http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/nonhaz/municipal/pubs/06data.pdf
